Tagung: „Social Contracts and Democracy in Times of the Anthropocene Thinking Beyond Crisis International Conference“ (16.-17. Dezember 2025)
This international conference invites to discover the link between two current debates in the Social Sciences and the Humanities, that have been rather disconnected so far: the one on the crisis of liberal democracy, and the one on the challenges of the Anthropocene.

According to Karl Marx (1981), democracy is the “resolved riddle of all constitutions”. However, it poses countless further riddles. Today, democracy is often framed as being synonymous with liberal democracy in Western capitalist societies. Although liberal-democratic constitutions declare that power emanates from the people, key political decisions are made based on the principles of profit maximization. How does the principle of popular sovereignty relate to the economic constitution of Western liberal societies? Can political equality and freedom exist in an order characterized by social and economic inequality? Is democracy merely a facade of bourgeois rule, or does it offer the possibility of liberation from it? (mehr …)
Tagung: Democracy and Gender
Im Mai findet eine von Clara Maier (Berlin) and Hedwig Richter (München) organisierte Online-Tagung zum Thema Democracy and Gender. The Legitimation of Power in Modern Societies statt. Das Programm ist dezidiert interdisziplinär angelegt und enthält politikwissenschaftliche, historische und politiktheoretische Beträge. Vom 22-24. April findet in Groningen die Konferenz “Knowledge, Citizenship, Democracy” statt. Die unter anderem von Lisa Herzog organisierte Konferenz wird sich unter anderem mit Fragen wie der Beziehung zwischen Experten und Öffentlichkeiten oder mit epistemischer Abhängigkeit beschäftigen.
