IPSA, 22nd World Congress of Political Science (Session: General Pool) 8-12 July, 2012, Madrid, Spain
Based on a somewhat Popperian assumption, this panel will explore how epistemo- logies can be used to sustain emancipatory political theories. However, there is no need to clarify whether this happens with strategic intent (such that epistemological positions are developed only for the purpose of sustaining normative political theo- ries, as Popper himself suggests) or not. This panel will focus on the following ques- tion by means of partly rational, partly historical reconstructions: How are epistemo- logies employed, and in what kinds of political theories, to confront 1) societal power relations and 2) authoritative cultural knowledge? It is expected that the more 1) rests on 2), the greater is the significance of the epistemological stand for an aut- horʼs political theory. Three sub-questions will be addressed: a) Can it be maintained that in contemporary western political discourse epistemology loses its significance for political theory because 1) does not rest on 2) any more? b) In contrast, as the example of M. al-Jabri suggests, ‚authenticʻ cultural resources can play an important role in defining a tenable epistemological position in non-western political thought. Hence, how do non-western political theorists draw on specific resources to confront societal power relations, existing cultural knowledge and Eurocentric epistemologies at the same time? c) And finally, how can cross-cultural transfers of knowledge be conceptualized and legitimized?
Please send an abstract of no more than 1.500 characters, no later than 1 Octo- ber 2011, to Leigh Jenco (lkj@nus.edu.sg) and to Holger Zapf (hzapf1@gwdg.de).
