„Dear Colleagues,
the Center for Area Studies (CAS) at Freie Universität Berlin is pleased to announce a lecture by Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Ph.D. (Humanities, Columbia University New York):
„An Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization“
The lecture title will also be the title of her new book. Prof. Spivak will deal with the question: „How can the humanities add to the privileging of space and motion in Area Studies today?“
G. C. Spivak is a literary critic, theorist, and describes herself as a „practical Marxist-feminist-deconstructionist“. She was born in India in 1942 and left it for the US in 1959. She is best known for the article „Can the Subaltern Speak?“, considered a founding text of postcolonialism. Spivak focuses on the cultural texts of those who are marginalised by dominant western culture and she critizes the tendency of institutional and cultural discourses/practices to exclude and marginalize the subaltern.
The lecture is part of the CAS lecture series: Spaces in Motion. Regional and Transregional Dynamics in a multipolar World“
