Nach Middlesex, dem King’s College London und Swansea ist nun auch an der Keele University die Philosophie unter Beschuss geraten. Dazu hat uns Peter Niesen folgende Nachricht geschickt, die wir hier gerne veröffentlichen:
„Kollegen an der Universität Keele in Nordengland haben einen Notruf gestartet, weil ihr Philosophie-Programm eingestampft werden soll. In Keele lehren und forschen sehr respektierte Leute aus der Politischen Philosophie und Theorie wie Glen Newey, John Horton und Sorin Baiasu; auch der Vordenker der Green Political Theory, Andy Dobson, ist dort Professor. Gemeinsam bietet man einen Masterstudiengang in Philosophy and Politics an. Die Logik in Keele scheint der in Swansea und an King’s College London aufs Haar zu gleichen: gerät ein Uni-Präsident in Großbritannien unter finanziellen Druck, sind zuerst immer die Philosophen dran – das bringt zwar keine großen Spareffekte, sendet aber ein Signal, dass am Unverwertbaren gekürzt wird. Von Sorin Baiasu erreicht uns folgende Wasserstandsmeldung, die besagt, dass es der Philosophie in Keele wieder gut geht:
Almost one year after the events of early 2011, Keele University hosted a major international philosophy conference: Toleration and Pragmatism: Themes from the Work of Professor J. Horton – The ‚J-J Rousseau‘ Annual Lecture and Conference. The fourth Annual Lecture of the Keele Forum for Philosophical Research took place in a packed Conference Room of the Claus Moser Research Centre. This was the second year that the Annual Lecture was organised jointly with a major international conference. Both events celebrated the work of Professor John Horton (Keele), who gave the Annual Lecture on the topic „What Might It Mean for Political Theory to be More Realistic?“. Speakers at the conference were well-known political philosophers from the UK, Belgium and Germany. Participants from 10 countries gathered for these events that, from now on, will bear the name of the famous French philosopher to mark both this year’s tercentenary of Rousseau’s birth and his stay in the little Staffordshire village of Wootton, between 22 March 1766 and 1 May 1767. Papers presented to the events will be published in the journal Philosophia.
